Kennett High School
409 Eagles Way,
North Conway
Presented in partnership with SAU 9, the conference features nationally known author and writing consultant Lester Laminack. Lester is Professor Emeritus at Western Carolina University and author of academic books (his latest is Learning Under the Influence of Language and Literature: Making the Most of Read-Alouds Across the Day, Heinemann) and children's books.
Join us as we explore the art and function of read aloud experiences in every classroom. Lester will consider three broad intentions for making read aloud an essential part of every day and will demonstrate the art of reading aloud well with specific attention to tone, intensity, pacing, and mood. In addition, he will unpack specific opportunities for making read aloud experiences a viable part of the instructional day.
Thoughtfully selected read aloud experiences can be the foundation for numerous mini-lessons in the writing workshop
Repeated focused read alouds of a small set of books make students intimately familiar with the ways writers use language to make their intentions more clear and focused
A well-chosen text set shared through read aloud experiences can layer in vocabulary, scaffold concepts and help students visualize what they are
A selection of picture books can help your students understand what it means to know our neighbors head to head, heart to heart, and soul to soul
Using a collection of picture books to examine bullying, taunting and teasing, read aloud experiences can serve to open dialogue around this critical and sensitive issue
Books will be available for purchase and signing from Heinemann & White Birch Books. Heinemann books will be available at a 30% discount.
