Ghost Hollow in Thornton was named for a ghostly prank. A young shopkeeper would wrap a sheet to a plank he fastened to a fence by the side of the road to scare folks until one night someone dared to challenge the would-be spector.
Thornton was named for the Hon. Dr. Matthew Thornton, one of NH signatories of the Declaration of Independence. Thrornton was incorporated in 1781.

Thornton Town House
Physical Address: Rte 175, Thornton, NH 03223
Description: 1n 1784, the town voted to build the first meeting house. It was completed in 1789 and both religious and business meetings were held there. In 1823, the name Old Meeting House was changed to Town Hall and later to Town House. About 1860, the building was moved across the road and fifteen feet added to its length.
Directions: I-93 to Exit 29. Left onto Route 3 North. Follow for three miles to Cross Road on right. Follow Cross Road to the end (appx 1 mile). Turn right onto Route 175. One half mile on right.
